Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker - Soggy Death Star Approach (2018)

Another couple of photoshop sketches of Rey's maritime approach to the sunken ruins of the Death Star. At the time the skiff was intended to be more of a traditional sailing vessel, with Rey frantically working the rigging as she fights the storm. As with the previous images, I was trying to use more of a traditional gouache painting style in photoshop in tribute to my childhood heroes Ralph McQuarrie, John Berkey and Syd Mead.

Really wanted to capture a long-lens feel, where the skiff disappears periodically behind the waves, and the Death Star ruins are simply a wall blotting out the horizon.

The earliest and least successful attempt at the shot, but I learned a lot from it about painting waves and capturing the atmosphere.
