The King's Man - Yusopov Palace (2018)

It was cool to see this shot of Yusupov's Palace show up in the trailer for The King's Man. I was asked to do a sketch as a guide for the eventual matte painting. Starting from location photos of the Palazzina Stupinigi in Italy and using an Art Deparment Sketchup block-model as a guide for the set extensions, I painted this Russian winter night scene. The final shot turned out pretty close in atmosphere and lighting. As I'm personally allergic to symmetrical compositions I favored the boathouse in the original composition, but alas I was pulled back to the inevitable straight-on view.

Final sketch, much closer to the final shot. Director Matthew Vaughn loves symmetrical composition.
