The King's Man - Concentration Camp (2018)

Another job that one gets assigned frequently in the art department is visualizing a build on location, as well as the digital set extension. This one was for the South African concentration camp featured in the opening of the film. A shooting location had been picked out in the UK's Midlands, and I was tasked with visualizing the set to scale in the location, as well as dressing the landscape to period with carriage tracks and extending the view with more mountainous scenery.

Working from a set design from art director Nick Gottchalk, I built models of the various set elements in Modo. I then extracted the location topology from Google Earth using Sketchup, and brought it into Modo. Using a background image, I matched the Modo camera perspective to the location photo. The camp was built up by arraying tents, fenceposts and grave markers as replicators on a mesh plane. I then distorted the plane to the Google Earth topology using background constraint, and the set elements moved into place accordingly. I could then render it out with the ground plane set as a shadow catcher, and composite it into the location photo in Photoshop. The rest is traditional painting and photo manipulation.
