For quite a while at the beginning of development on Episode 9, the world that became Pasaana was envisioned as an Everglades-like wetland. JJ wanted to stage a speederbike-like chase over water and islands, crashing through the indigenous huts that spot the swampy terrain. Legendary Star Wars designers Eric Tiemens and Ryan Church and I all took a crack at it, and in the absence of a developed mythology at this point, I imagined this planet as the source of the fibers First Order uniforms were stitched from. I envision an economy based on harvesting the incredibly tall reeds that covered the swamps, and extrapolated that into architecture based on tension structures made from lashing bundles of living reeds into strong, flexible poles that would suspend the huts above the waterline.
