One of my favorite images to paint for The King's Man. Production Designer Darren Gilford had found amazing period photos of howitzers surrounded by literal mountains of spent shells. Director Matthew Vaughn wanted to capture the relentlessness of the War in one image, so with the help of a replicator rig Darren had worked out in Modo to populate a landscape with shells, I set up this composition to paint over, highlighting shell-shocked soldiers taking an all too brief respite from the horrors of war. The mood and palette was inspired by original war paintings of the era.
